DirectGreenEnergy4Trains – The Next Step Toward a Virtual Power Plant for Railways

The project team at DB Energie headquarters

From Concept to Implementation: How Wind and Solar Power Can Be Integrated into the Railway Power Grid

How can renewable energy be harnessed for railway operations in an even more targeted and cost-effective manner? This is precisely the question the DirectGreenEnergy4Trains project is addressing in its current phase. Building on previous results, the current status of the work, technical scenarios, and the next steps in development were discussed in depth at the project meeting held at DB Energie’s headquarters in Frankfurt on December 17, 2025.

The focus was particularly on the further development of scenarios and the design of the virtual power plant (VPP).

With this, DirectGreenEnergy4Trains is taking the next logical step: moving from scenario analysis to robust concepts for a virtual power plant designed to harness wind and solar energy efficiently, flexibly, and directly for climate-neutral rail transport.
